As the Philippines braces for a fresh storm, Typhoon Kalmaegi rages across Vietnam.

Vietnam’s DAK LAK — At least five people were killed by Typhoon Kalmaegi’s powerful winds and heavy rains that hit Vietnam on Friday. The storm also destroyed houses, uprooted trees, and blew off roofs. Survivors in the Philippines, where the storm killed at least 204 people earlier this week, cried over their loved ones’ coffins and prepared for another typhoon.
Recovery efforts started in both countries’ devastated cities and villages as the storm progressed. People in the provinces of central Vietnam cleaned up garbage and fixed roofs.
As he ran his palm over his wife’s coffin, Jimmy Abatayo, who lost his wife and nine close family members when the storm caused flooding in the province of Cebu in central Philippines, was overcome with grief and shame.
I was capable of swimming. Abatayo, 53, paused before sobbing. “I told my family to swim, you will be safe, just swim, be brave, and keep swimming,” she added. “I would never see them again, so they did not hear what I had to say.”
